I recently upgraded to stronger air pump in my hydro garden and was very happy with how quiet and strong the pump was. But realized I was getting sound from the puff-puff-puff variable pressure reverberating from the air line as it entered my reservoir. I made this silencer that made a noticeable difference in eliminating that noise. Now the fine bubbles themselves are the loudest sound.
This silencer acts to reduce the noise 3 ways. First it acts as an expansion tank, smoothing out the fluctuations in air pressure. Second, it incorporates an interior baffle to disrupt the inertia of the air. And third, a loop on top allows you to hang it from a rubber band to isolate the vibration it absorbs.
I coated the exterior of mine (pictured) with epoxy for an airtight seal.
