Today, I give you....... (Drumroll please).......
The Hubble space telescope, as a lamp, and a desk tidy, and whatever you want it to be really.
This was my first ever proper 3d print project I have worked on, so means quite a lot to me. It has a 9-LED array fixed to the panel at the top. At the bottom there is a potentiometer and a push toggle switch, the whole system runs from a 9v battery, and all the body is fully 3d printed. The design is partially based on NASA's Hubble Space Telescope model (Found here: https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/detail/HST)
This is a model I made ages ago in 2020, and has been on my website for quite a while, but was never put on Thingiverse, but today that all changes, so here it is!! There may be some issues with this design, but I have tried to refine it as much as possible, there may be some more changes in the future.
Enjoy!
What is what:
H Display.3mf & H Display (STL).stl
This is just a display model for use on Thingiverse (here) and on Sketchfab (here:https://skfb.ly/6Xyp8), there is not much to it really. It is basically what it says on the tin.
H MK4.3mf & H MK4.stl
This is the most up-to-date version of the base for the lamp, supports will be needed for the solar panels and the base, removal of these supports is tricky but is doable. Be aware the pins on-top of the base to connect it to the top are quite fragile (or maybe it is just us) but the pins snapped off a couple times, in the end I just cut them off and superglued the top to the bottom.
For this part there is no mount for the 9V battery, and the battery will just need to be hot glued to the base, the Potentiometer and the Pushbutton should push in, and then need to be secured by glue to prevent them falling out.
Hubble Lamp 2 (3).stl
This is the most up-to-date version of the top half of the model, supports are needed for the LED array holder, and the pin holes, the LED array is positioned in the holder at the top, and the cables are ran all the way through the hole and into the base. You can add pencils, pens, or other items into the hole.NOTE: the LED array holder is quite loose and broke off mine after falling off a shelf, I would recommend strengthening this part with a glue of a lower print height to strengthen this part to prevent breakage
H MK3 cover (stl).stl & H MK3 cover.3mf
This is the cover for the bottom of the base, this should friction fit in, if it is too tight use a file of some sandpaper to adjust the fit, this cover covers (yes, I know, a cover that covers, whoever would of thought of that) the electronics in the base, it also has a small notch in it for easier removal, I would recommend positioning this notch at the back of the model for better aesthetics, but it's up to you.
NOTE: DO NOT PRINT THESE PARTS, THEY ARE PURELY HERE TO SHOW THE DESIGN STEPS AND PROCESS. THESE MODELS MAY NOT FUNCTION OR MAY HAVE UNDESIRABLE FUNCTIONS
Hubble Lamp 2 (2).stl & Hubble Lamp 2.stl
These are the first two versions of the base top part of the desk tidy/lamp, I would not recommend printing these as there are plenty of issues with them, they are just here for reference.
9V_base_Cover.stl
This is part of the original design for the Desk tidy/lamp, this piece slots into the sides of the Hubble_Lamp_1 series of models to block off the electronics.
Hubble_lamp_top.stl
This is part of the second set of designs for the project, this design was eventually scrapped, but may still be functional. This model was never tested so it is unknown if this design works.
H_MK3_2.stl & H_MK3.3mf & H_MK3.stl
This design is probably the closest to the final design (other than the final design), it was created as a test for the final design, other than that, there is not much to say about it.
H_MK2.3mf
This model is basically the previous model (^^^^) but in two pieces, again this was just a step in the design process.
Hubble_Lamp_1_7.stl --> Hubble_Lamp_1.stl & Hubble_Lamp_1_201108_120103.3mf & Hubble_Lamp.stl
All of these are slight variations throughout the design process, Hubble_Lamp.stl being the first ever version.
Hubble_lamp_base_3mf.3mf & 9V_base.stl
These are both original designs for the base, both later get incorporated into other designs.
Hubble_lamp_top_3mf.3mf & Hubble_lamp_top.3mf
These are both original designs for the top, both later get incorporated into other designs.
Hubble_Solar.stl
This is the model for the solar panels use, the first-generation design had removable solar panels, but this was changed in later versions.
