Built between 1857 and 1858 from around three million white firebricks, Hownsgill viaduct was another of Sir Thomas Bouch's engineering feats. It's 700 feet long, 175 feet high and features 12 beautifully crafted arches. It crosses a deep, dry ravine. Before its construction, freight on the Stanhope & Tyne Railway was lowered and raised on inclines by stationary steam engines. #Bridge #C2C #Consett #County_Durham #Durham #Gill #Hownsgill #Viaduct #Waskerley_Way
