Colonel Sam Nutt opened the first hotel in White River Junction in 1849 calling it the Junction House. When 1859 rolled around, the Borrons Family bought another hotel building and added it the Junction house. The turn of the century brought at least 50 passengers trains a day, causing the hotel to be very busy. The hotel is now on its third building, because of pervious fires that took place in 1878 and 1925. In 1924 the hotel name was changed to Hotel Coolidge in honor of President Calvin Coolidge’s father, who stayed frequently at the hotel. In 1950 Peter Michael Gish created the Vermont room in the Coolidge. He was a student at Dartmouth that paid for his room and board to live at the Coolidge for painting murals and portraits. The painting depict life in Vermont with its agricultural themes and history. Hotel Coolidge has been owned by Dave Briggs since the 1980’s. The building is still used as a Hotel, as well as having rooms for functions, a youth hostel, and a restaurant. Future plans include keeping the hotel going, and keeping it old fashioned, even though modern times are here in White River, and still coming. #09 #coolidge #creating #hartford #hotel #junction #river #vermont #white
