This Nacelle is modeled after the Trent 900 Nacelle as used on the A380. It is designed specifically for the 3D Printable High-Bypass Jet Engine by CATIAV5FTW (Chris Shakai). While his model is not a 3-spool design like the Trent, his 3D printable model is the best tried and proven 3d printable jet engine model. His has over 200 makes and a couple of dozen remixes. The only thing his lacked was a good nacelle. So far no nacelle designs of any type have been close to correct so I chose to give it a try. My Nacelle was designed using publicly available pictures and diagrams from the internet. Layouts were traced using the TLAR (That Looks About Right) method. Where no information or pictures was available the SWAG (Scientific Wild A$$ Guess) method was used.
Design criteria: Use the model from CATIAV5FTW with a minimum of required changes or substitutions. Require the minimum use of support structures. Make it visually appealing and technically accurate without excessive part counts or complexity. Use similar assembly techniques to CATIAV5FTW. And lastly, allow full display of his great model.
Technical details: Scale: 1/16. Cowl sections are hinged and then held closed using neodymium magnets. The pylon and associated hardware is integral to the cowling. While the pylon adds complexity, it really was not possible to properly design and construct the nacelle without the pylon. I did a remix of many of the core engine components to eliminate the need for supports. The mixer from CATIV5FTW, while unique and quite interesting, did not lend itself to blending in the reverser cowls so a new mixer was required. An optional new nozzle stator and plug were created to match the new mixer profile.
This model does not have "operating" reversers. It is more like the outer engines on the A380 that don't have reversers. I can find no information or pictures of the front engine mount. Mine is a complete SWAG. If anybody can provide some details I'll see if can improve it. Same for the reverser cowl alignment mechanisms/pins. The reverser alignment pins I've incorporated are wrong but functional. Can anybody provide some info or pictures for them? The engine mount locations and the pylon box structure have been highly modified to fit the model from CATIAV5FTW. While the pylon structure resembles the real A380, it is what you would call "stand off scale". This model was designed using Inventor Pro 2019. STLs were created from within Inventor. At this particular time I choose to only share the STL files. If someone needs a specific design change, I'll collaborate and/or share source files as needed.
