I asked myself how were made the helicoidal pillars in cathedrals. Specifically, the first picture presents the Bernini's baldacchino in the altar of the San Pietro Basilica in Vatican, and you can see the four great pillars around it.

Here is the solution. You have to associate the following three steps with the corresponding pictures.

Step 1: Use the Coil tool (in Inventor) to generate a 3D Sketch with a helix.
Step 2: Create a circle centered on the point where the helix starts.
Step 3: Use the Sweep tool to sweep the circle on the helix path.

You can use any CAD software to create this simple object. Bernini did not use any CAD software in the 16th century to make these pillars, of course...
