Timber frame tie beam from the Hawkins house (18th century), Derby, Connecticut, USA. Actual tie beams in the house run approximately east-to-west; hence, this SketchUp component is oriented along the red axis. The layout face of this particular tie beam is oriented north. This is what I mean by the designation '+1'. On the other hand, I would use '-1' to designate a layout face oriented south; that is, the equivalent of rotating the +1 component 180 degrees over the ground plane. Note that this model is still being adjusted, and not yet final. Copyleft: CC-BY-NC-SA by Birmingham Point Preservationists.
