Decided I wanted to do a Hal 9000
I used a few things to set the scale here, first, I wanted to use a 5Mm red led so I kept that spacing for 5mm (you will need to sand it slightly to fit the led snug), second I wanted to use a 35MM glass Cabochon lens as I had them from another project that I ended up using something else for, so these are cheap 7 bucks for 5 on amazon (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01F8S1PN4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) . I also wanted to print the sections in one pass without joining halves, I am not a purist for scale depending on the item, and I thought having all this fit on one bed for the print would be great too.
I didn't add a whole lot of tolerance here, I always believe in a little sanding to make the best fit without gaps and or glue. This design omits the inner lens but you could still put one to size provided it won't hit the top of the main lens. I also included a HAL 9000 plaque, it's not the proper hollowed font, but it will print without an issue and looks smart when painted.
I have included a couple versions here, a full print bed version (this will test your bed levelling (lol), a single file version, and I have included a 15mm tall frame if you need a bit more space and want more of an outer edge, I have designed this to use a cr2032 battery directly for the 5mm LED with no need for resistors, but I may also wire this for direct USB or power adapter directly (the holes inside will accommodate whatever you need really. your needs may vary.
I have added alternate name place versions (one with a raised outer edge and not as wide) and I added an alternate speaker grill (modified from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:906705) Just to give some more variety of choices My Photos use the standard name plaque and the alternate grill with the 15mm frame (just for reference) and it looks great to me and just the right size for fun applications.
The LED fits nicely under the glass lens without issues. :)
If you like this design please like the originals too: speaker grill (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:907342) and original HAL parts (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1805762/files). I just scaled it all to fit an ender 3 pro with some nice combinations of various builds for a specific look and a simpler build.
The full bed print takes about 5 hours and 42 minutes at .2 20% or 2.5 hours at .3 (both at 35mm/s) I turned off ironing for this to keep some texture for the grill and plate.
Enjoy!
Post print cleanup:
Some light sanding on the insert edges nothing major or difficult, just to remove elephants foot/expansion including the round eye insert and the LED hole
Updated the Eye (a bit more clearance for the glass insert) this now works perfectly as a drop in The eye does not snap into the ring, again this is by design to give the parts some more depth when assembled, I just used hot glue on the back to hold them together
Updated the Hal9000 plaque, it printed badly for some reason and looking at it the text needs to be a bit thicker
I corrected the eye which had very thin upper layers on the outer ring for some reason on the original, this will give a clean print there now
updated the all in one print for all fixes
With the sanding everything snaps in nicely, the glass lens will not snap and stay, it's rounded and must be glued on the edge.
Enjoy! If you enjoy my prints please consider donating, even a dollar helps :) it's always appreciated :) https://www.paypal.me/RychardK
