The Gulf Building, now known as the JPMorgan Chase Building or by its street address, 712 Main St., is a 430ft (131m) tall skyscraper in Houston, Texas. Designed by architects Alfred C. Finn, Kenneth Franzheim, and J. E. R. Carpenter, the art deco building was completed as Houston's tallest building in 1929 and retained that title until 1963. Featuring dramatic setbacks and a symmetrical design that characterized that era of skyscrapers, the tower was inspired by the highly influential 2nd-place finishing submission by Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen in the competition to design Chicago's Tribune Tower.
