Basic model of 'Gran Telescopio Canarias' (GTC for short). When finished (planned for the end 2007), this will be the largest optical telescope in service in the world (diameter of the primary mirror is 10.4 meters, some 34 feet). The dome has an inner diameter of 33 meters (108 ft), and the telescope itself is some 27 meters high (88 ft). The project is an spanish initiative (through Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, the Spanish Government and the Canary Islands Government), though there are other countries involved, most importantly Mexico(UNAM and INAOE) and U.S.A (U. of Florida).
