Granary (Port Louis)

Completed between 1929 and 1934 and covering an area of more than one and half acres, the two-storeyed concrete granary was used long ago for the storage and protection of grain against pests. Interestingly, the granary's six electrically operated hoists lifted bags of grain at the quay from barges to the top floor of the building which was operated as a custom shed. The first and ground floors were divided into twelve and six seperate stores respectively. Gravity chutes connected the first floor with the delivery yard at the rear of the building. Until the 1950’s, sacks of rice and other grains were loaded onto trains for distribution to various parts of the island. The red-brick granary was also the largest warehouse in the Indian Ocean and is a reminder of a past era where the famous dock workers used to work in the harbour.
