A gladius is a short sword popularized by the Roman empire from the second century B.C.E through second century C.E., a span of about 400 years. Though many sources define the gladius as a Roman sword, it was actually the original work of tribes on the Iberian Peninsula. Gladius swords had a few variants over the years and proved to be more effective in combat as they were further developed.
