Up until the 1950s, all jazz guitars had an ebony or rosewood bridge, while the strings were attached to a so-called trapezoid metal tailpiece. The first Gibson Les Paul models from 1952 also had such a trapezoidal tailpiece. A simple steel wire hanger held a cross bar through which the strings were threaded.
