This sideboard, which has been hailed as one of the most important works to be identified with the de Stijl movement, exists only in a series of subsequent issues. The original piece, thought to have been constructed in oak, was purchased by the architect Piet Elling, and is believed to have been destroyed by fire. Van de Groenekan, who made all of Rietveld's furniture, made approximately ten sideboards. of which the current ones is one in the 1950s and 60s. The first was executed with Rietveld's assistance and is now in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. A subsequent edition, undertaken by Cassina, was abandoned after manufacture proved too costly. A version of the sideboard in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, is a prototype for the re-edition by Cassina. #architect #architecture #Cassina #classic #Des_Stijl #design #dutch #form_follows_function #furniture #Gerrit_Rietveld #Groenekan #modern #moebel #oak #prototype #wooden_furniture
