A framed print of the steam ship ‘S.S Delphine’. Print design (but not the photograph) by me. 43x26 Inches. The steam ship Delphine is one of the most remarkable and unique yachts afloat today. Launched in 1921 in Detroit Michigan for the owner of the Dodge motor company - Horace Dodge – she is the largest American built yacht still afloat. Unfortunately, Horace Dodge never got to enjoy the ship named after his daughter, as he died just a few months before she was completed. He wasn’t just a businessman but also an engineer, Dodge designed the unique 1,500 hp quadruple-expansion steam engines which still power the vessel today. The Dodge family used the yacht until she was requisitioned by the US Navy in 1942. Although now armed and with a camouflage paint scheme she never saw action. Re-named USS Dauntless, she served as the flagship of Admiral King, Chief of the U.S. fleet and Chief of Naval Operations, and unofficially as the presidential yacht. It was onboard this ship - so the story goes - that Winston Churchill, Franklin D Roosevelt, and Soviet Foreign Minister Vyachslav Molotov prepared the Yalta convention prior to the Yalta conference in Feb 1945 that defined the outcome of the second world war and the years that followed. After World war 2, Delphine returned to the Dodge family until the mid 60’s when she was sold and used as a training ship until the mid 80’s, when she was sold again. During the 80's and 90's she passed through several owners who did nothing with her until she ended up at a scrap yard in Marseille, a near rusted hulk. She was bought by her current owner who carried out one of the most ambitious restoration projects ever on a yacht. Over 6 years and undisclosed millions of dollars, she was returned to as near original condition as was possible including retaining the original steam engines. Delphine was re-christened in September of 2003, by H.S.H. Princess Stephanie of Monaco, 82 years after she was first launched. She now cruises the Mediterranean, based in Monaco, with 5 star accommodation for 28 guests served by 28 crew.
