3-Inch Gun M1903 on Barbette Carriage M1903 (the gun is not finished and will be replaced when completed) In September of 1942 Battery 5 became operational on the point at Fort Miles. These weapons were used as an anti motor torpedo boat (AMTB) defense against small, fast moving vessels that might drop ordnance in the harbor area. Since the larger weapons were too big to track and fire on a smaller craft like the torpedo boats, the US Army ordered a battery of 4 three-inch rapid fire guns to be placed near the tip of the cape to address this threat. The three-inch guns were replaced later during the war with more accurate and more reliable 90mm AMTB guns. Fort Miles was added to the National Register of Historic Places in April 2005. #Coast_Artillery, #Military, #Army, #Artillery, #Battery, #Casemate , #Bunker, #Gun, #3_inch, #3_inch_gun, #Cantonment, #WW2, #WWII, #Fort, #Fort_Miles, #FMHA, #HDD, #Barbette_Carriage, #Fire_Control,
