Flag of Ontario (Canada)

The current Ontario Flag was adopted May 21, 1965. It is a Red Ensign with the emblem of the province of Ontario. The coat of arms depicts in the lower part three golden maple leaves on a green background representing Canada, at the top the cross of Saint George representing England. Before 1965, Ontario did not have its own flag but used the old Canadian flag which consisted of a Red Ensign with the Canada coat of arms. The federal government's decision to replace the old Red Ensign with the current flag was very unpopular in Ontario especially in rural areas, the political basis of Ontario Governor John Robarts. Robarts proposed that Ontario have its own flag and that it was a Red Ensign like the old Canadian flag. The only difference was the replacement of the Canadian coat of arms with the Ontario coat of arms. The flag of Manitoba had a similar story. #flag #Ontario #Canada
