I like to barbecue and needed a rack to hold some firewood along with wood chunks on top -- this top shelf would also be good for kindling, etc..
This rack is large enough to hold 1/2 of a rick (about a toyota corolla wagon full).
It's made of just 2x4's and a couple cedar fence pickets. It also uses 3 concrete blocks for the base to keep the wood base up off the ground. It's depth is just right to hold the firewood and to sit flush with the bricks -- 16 inches deep.
It cost me less than $25 to make (screws and all).
