Made an adapter to use the top cover of a plastic cake carrier commonly available in Canadian and US stores. The original Thing uses EU containers which are difficult to source on this side of the pond.
The top cover I used is the Wilton Cake Caddy: http://www.wilton.com/portable-cake-caddy/2105-9952.html#start=11, available at Walmart, Michaels, etc. I got mine at my local Canadian Tire, along with the Salton VitaPro food dehydrator (which is the same as the original, and the same as what is also sold as a PrintDry).
There is enough room for two full-size spools. I did not try using the dryer as a filament source, presumably you could use the same parts as the original.
Just print 6 of these, slide them over the existing tabs on the trays, and the top of the cake caddy will fit just fine without any air gaps. Use the center piece from the original Thing.
