These three models show either an empty or full cargo ship in Federation service. The armed cargo ship represents a common cargo ship conversion used for convoy and long range patrol. The armed cargo ship has limited firepower and lacks defense or missile armament, but are still used in less dangerous areas. Many have been fitted with the obsolete laser beam turrets taken from other ships.
Being a cargo ship, the armed cargo ships have excellent range, and are very cheap but should not be used in the line of battle, as has been discovered in the battles around Altair against the Alien menace.
The turrets have no elevation so like many older Federation ships, the whole ship needs to pivot to bring targets under fire.
In times of less tension between the main outbreaks of conflict, many armed cargo ships revert to cargo carrying and have their guns laid up in storage.
