The pieces represents one of most famous structures from country they are from.
I tried to choose such building or sculpture to fit actual position of piece on the chess board.

So:
Black pieces represents EUROPE, where:
Pawn: Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate), Germany
Knight: The Kelpies, Scotland
Bishop: Atomium, Belgium
Rook: Tour Eiffel (Eiffel Tower), France
Queen: Родина-мать зовёт! (The Motherland Calls), Russia
King: David, Italy

White pieces represents REST OF THE WORLD, where:
Pawn: Chichén Itzá, Mexico
Knight: أبو الهول (Great Sphinx of Giza), Egypt
Bishop: कमल मंदिर (Lotus Temple), India
Rook: 南京陶塔 (Porcelain Tower of Nanjing), China
Queen: Statue of Liberty, USA
King: Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), Brazil

I used models from various places eg. myminifactory.com
I scaled, repaired and converted them to the final form.
Thanks to the authors.

Note: Of course things are not in scale.
