This smoke stack sets on the Estate Whim Sugar Plantation Museum in Frederiksted, U.S. Virgin Islands. It is one of the few remaining sructures maintained on the property. Nearby is the Whim Great House and Watch House. Between 1894 and 1908 this chimney was built to handle the heating needs of the new steam equipment installed at that time. It is the largest of the chimneys built for the sugar factory here at the Whim Estate. It was abandoned in 1920. It is almost 75 feet (22m) tall and 13-1/2 feet (4.1) wide at its base. The walls are more than 3 feet (1 m) thick at the base. This height creates a draft that moves the air through the fire box and increases the heat from the burning of the crushed cane (bagasse) and other trash. Signage by David Hayes c2000
