Emergency Brake

Imagine you are riding serenely down the street on your bike, when suddenly a car door opens in front of you. You try to brake, but the momentum of the bike cannot be stopped in time. You have the choice of swerving into traffic, slamming onto the ground, or crashing into the open door. All of which will probably hurt a lot.

But what if you had an emergency brake? The scenario would not seem as drastic. By pulling on secondary brake levers connected to your emergency brakes, your bike would come to an abrupt halt.

That is where my design comes in. Using a similar structure to that of bicycle phone chargers, my emergency brake can be powered by a spring or other mechanics. When the secondary brake lever is pulled, the wheel of the emergency brake spins in a counter direction to the bicycle wheel. This will allow the bicycle to decelerate at a much quicker rate.

Undoubtedly, stress would be put on the spokes of the bicycle wheel, but I would prefer a broken bicycle wheel to broken bones.

When the emergency brakes are not in use, the wheel of the emergency brake will be loose and allowed to spin along with the bicycle wheel in the same direction.
