This building, built in 1756, for Maria Theresa of Austria was formerly called the Court of Habsburg. In June and July 1942 it was set up by the Germans as collect and transit camp. During World War II more than 25,000 people, mostly Jews, were transported by train to the extermination camp of Auschwitz from this camp in Mechelen. Of these, only 1221 persons returned alive. A small part of the former barracks is now the Jewish Museum of Deportation and Resistance. But it will be renamed in Kazerne Dossin, Memorial, Holocaust Museum and Documentation centre on Human Rights in 2012 when a new building (museum / monument) will be built next to the former barracks.
