This is intended to be a fun notice-board or fridge magnet design, based on our dog, a black poodle named Shadow.
It was also a first experiment with 3D design and printing for me and my daughter.
We started from a photo of Shadow curled-up on a sofa, loaded that into Sketchup, and manually traced the outline. Then we closed the shapes, pulled it into 3 dimensions, and added a hole in the back for the magnet to go.
I'm sure there are smaller quantities of magnets available, but we went for value for money with a batch of 50 as follows:http://www.banggood.com/50pcs-N52-Super-Strong-Disc-Magnets-20mm-x-3mm-Rare-Earth-Neodymium-Magnets-p-997169.html
Originally we did a 20mm diameter hole for the magnet, but that needed widening to fit the magnets in, so the uploaded file has the hole enlarged to 21mm diameter. We glued the magnets in place with a small blob of Araldite.
After a little bit of searching around, I chose to print this with 3dprint-uk.co.uk, using their (only) material 'PA2200 Nylon', and carbon-black and polish processing options. This did end up with a larger order quantity than I had originally envisaged, so I wonder if we might go through something like 3dhubs.com if doing it again, but we were certainly very pleased with the product look, feel, and overall quality from 3dprint-uk.
This came out very well to represent our black poodle. See some photos attached.
It was a fun project, and has given us some lovely friendly magnets to use and share with family and friends.
