These models are examples of surfaces that have a nonremovable discontinuity at the origin. They are examples I use in one of my lessons for my Multivariable Calculus class.
Infinity Surface has the equation z = y/(x^2 + y^2).
At (0,0) you can find limits of 0, infinity, and negative infinity.
Pinched Surface has the equation z = 2xy/(x^2 + y^2).
At (0,0) you can find limits of 0, 1 and -1.
Created with Mathematica.
Infinity Surface approximately 102 x 102 x 102 mm. Printed with supports and raft.
Pinched Surface approximately 102 x 102 x 52 mm. Printed with supports and raft.
See photos.
