An engineering marvel and overall work of art, the Lutheran parish, Hallgrímskirkja, is one of the most famous landmarks in Iceland. Inspired by both its unique beauty and architecture, I redesigned the traditional building into a wearable diadem. Ideally, the diadem would be made out of precious metals, such as gold and silver, with diamonds and other jewels added as embellishments. Although the designs and details of the headpiece are exceptionally intricate, the diadem can easily be created through the use of a 3D printer. With the development of printers capable of printing metal, models such as this diadem will no longer be limited by the materials used by a 3D printer.
The design of the diadem itself is based purely on the architecture of the Hallgrímskirkja. Its balance of straight lines and curved edges resonate with its simple yet complex structure. Functioning as a wearable headpiece, the symmetry across multiple planes allows for its weight to be evenly dispersed, and thus maintain its balance and functionality. The diadem is a prime example of the possibilities that exist in revisioning the purpose of a traditional building. Through the use of 3D printing, such ideas can become a reality.
