For hundreds of years, the Yellowknives had numerous small settlements used as fish camps on the east shore of the North Arm and in Yellowknife Bay. According to Elders, people were building their own homes at Dettah since at least the 1800's. In the 1920's, the Indian Agent Bourget was offered the temporary use of the Chief’s house (Yellowknives Dene Band 1993). With the development of mining in the 1930's, more families moved from surrounding settlements to Dettah to be closer to the employment opportunities and services in Yellowknife. In the 1960's, Dettah was connected to Yellowknife by an all-weather road, new housing was built, and a small school was established. Land Use Planning
