Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England standing at over 3200 feet above sea level. The exposed summit of this mountain is subjected to extreme weather conditions throughout the year, from high winds and rain to several feet of snow in the winter months. Because of the conditions stone shelters have existed for hundreds of years around the summit as a refuge for Sheppard’s to get out of the weather. My design is a modern interpretation of the traditional stone wall shelters that have been used across the British Isles for Centuries, built using the local stone and timber. The shelter is entered through a double door foyer, designed to keep the worst of the weather outside and the heat inside. The Circular flow of the interior is designed so that the Living / sleeping area is as far away from the entrance as possible while maintaining the small 9m2 footprint. The Living area is South facing and has full height windows to take advantage of the spectacular views and allow the heat of the sun to warm the stone floor. The roof is partly glazed, but mostly Moss covered which acts as natural insulation for the shelter. #Design_It #Guggenheim #Scafell_Pike #Shelter
