Description
I wanted to try to incorporate some 3D printing into my woodworking hobby with some decorative corbels. Molding simply looks so much better with some kind of architectural elements added to it but buying it from the store gets expensive very quickly.
I finally decided to give CAD a go and picked up Autodesk Fusion 360 because it was free for hobbyists. Using a Lulzbot Mini with maximum print dimensions of 6 inches, I designed this corbel to fit the max printing dimensions of the Lulzbot. Unfortunately, I quickly found out that you'll need to do a lot of tinkering with the standard Cura settings to get the max dimensions; seeing how I'm a novice at all of this I just simply scaled it to the max with the dimensions it allowed me to print. The final product length is something like 5.5 inches by 5.5 inches at it's maximum.
Build
Tools Used
Cordless Drill
Table Saw with pivoting saw head (alternatively you can use an angled circular saw)
I used a 1/4" ply ripped with a table saw at 45 degrees to build the cleat backing. I then used a stud finder to locate the studs on the wall and drilled the backing plate directly into the wall. This allowed me to cut the length of my shelf at any length and attach the corbels/consoles to it. I found it difficult to attach the shelf onto the bracket without marking the holes precisely; therefore there is room for improvement in the design here.
