Compulsive buying disorder, also known as shopping addiction, is a mental disorder that affects about 18 million people in the United States. Unlike regular shoppers who shop with a budget or buy only the needed products, compulsive shoppers essentially get addicted to how their brain feels while shopping. The release of endorphins and dopamine that comes from shopping is similar to that of using drugs, so it drives shoppers to buy more things and excessively spend money -- leaving them in an immense amount of credit card debt.
Dash wallet works as a tool that helps to prevent compulsive shopping by giving a small "dosage" of the shopping experience. It works like a regular wallet that holds credit cards, cash, and coins, but Amazon Dash button attached on the top. The design of the wallet forces the user to touch the button before reaching for the credit card inside of it. And by clicking the button, Amazon Dash automatically orders a box of cereal bar that costs just $4.99. This gives the users a small dosage of euphoric feeling that comes from shopping while preventing them from spending an unaffordable amount of money.
[This project intends to address the problem within hyper-consumeristic culture by using the most commercialized device, Amazon Dash, as a cure for shopping addiction.]
