In 1921 Bessie Coleman was the first African American and the first Native American woman pilot. After WW1 Bessie's brothers had returned from the war with stories. Bessie was inspired to become a pilot. No flight school in America would take her because she was African American and a woman. So learnt to fly in France. Wishing to own a plane and start a flight school in America. Bessie put on displays and gave talks and lessons. Encouraging African Americans and women in flying. Before performing she would insist against separation of African and white Americans. On April 30th 1926 at the age of 34 there was a flying accident. Bessie and the co pilot William Wills did not survive. The model is the plane Bessie had a crash landing in after an engine failure. 1923.
