Cube Spinner: Two Versions (Loose or Grooved)
If we make a circular cut around a vertex of a cube, we get a spinner after adding a bit of tolerance. The structure has a strong aesthetic appeal. My first experiment was given to a little kid in my math class, who said he likes it so much and he wanted to keep it. Of course, I said yes, with the parent’s approval.
To keep the core from coming out, we can add a groove. So I tried it, based on my previous work on spinning structures. It turns out to be a great math toy!
There are two versions here (with two sizes), both of which can be printed in one piece at a resolution 0.1mm. The loose one allows the core to come out so one can see its inner structure. It is easy to separate. The grooved one calls for a bit of wiggling but still works well according to my experiments. Be patient! Loosen the two pieces, clean up the edges as necessary, and turn it around for a few minutes for smoother rotations. A drop of lubricant may also help. Have fun!
