Fusion360 models added for your convenience. Have fun.
I wanted to improve a few things I had noticed with other mask designs that I had tried out:
long-term durability
a. walls are significantly thicker than some of the first designs I pulled off this site
b. increases print time, but makes a part which will stand up to daily wear over several months
ease of changing filter
a. filter is a 40mm dia circular piece of non-woven polypropylene cloth (moisture barrier)
b. 1 or 2 filters are placed in cap and cap is screwed onto mask body
c. no need for fasteners (as with my first attempt at redesign) or snap-together parts (which have high-stress and require careful machine tuning)
long-term comfort
a. This design has been tested for all-day wear indoors and outdoors for several weeks straight. No fatigue or discomfort noted.
b. this design requires a thin strip of self-adhesive foam window/door seal around its perimeter. This dramatically improves comfort and seal. Hardware stores sell this material in rolls for $5 and you can split the width of the strip into thirds. Very low cost for the amount of material.
c. this design requires a 3/4-1" strap of elastic (pants elastic works great) for head strap. Also consider using fabric/velcro or nylon cord - both have been tested and work well.
printer-friendliness
a. overhangs are limited and shallow where possible, mitigating most associated defects
b. limited support required, decreasing amount of wasted material (if printed with "nose" oriented down)
c. fewer parts means less build-plate real-estate used. More parts can be printed per job.
This design still has a couple of flaws that I have noticed since wearing it:
condensation happens near the chin. Suggestion is to simply wipe it dry and disinfect every once in a while.
voice is notably muffled while wearing.
a. I actually suggest a multi-layered cloth mask instead if you expect to be talking to people a lot. I have to switch out masks if I am giving a presentation so others can hear me more clearly.
