This is a model of a c.1942 Clyde Whirley Crane. These were commonly used in shipyards and ports. I've included pics of the crane that this is based on. This crane is still in service. I designed and built this model for a co-worker's going away souvenir. Scale is 1:133.333
I designed this in Sketchup. I have a Monoprice Mini printer, so I'm limited to 120mmx120mm. I had to break it up in to smaller pieces to make it work. You'll have to glue most of the pieces together for final assembly. I made a tab for the boom to get it to fit together securely. I printed this out of PLA and used a hot screwdriver to weld the pieces together.
If you have a larger printer, you could print the wheels onto the bottom of the structure as one piece. I did them separately and glued them on.
I had trouble getting the cab to print with a hole in the bottom for the rotation. I ended up printing a separate piece with the hole (flat blue piece), drilling a hole in the bottom of the cab, then gluing them together.
The original cab design had the mast and crows nest in it. It printed, but there was no strength there. I printed the mast separately (pink) and glued it in.
The only piece not included is the pin to attach the boom to the cab. I used a piece of brass tubing.
This is my first upload here. It may require some tweaking. If you have comments, please let me know. If you make one, I'd love to see it. I put a lot of time in designing, printing and assembling this.
There is a crane similar to this one in Baltimore Harbor that is being restored as a museum piece.
Update: 9/7/16 Made separate .stl files for the components.
