Chelmsford cathedral is a Church of England cathedral and was build as a local church approx 800 years ago when the town was established. It was not until 1914 that it became a cathedral when the Diocese of Chelmsford was created. The cathedral is the second smallest Anglican cathedral in England. The tower is to the west side of the building and houses 13 bells. Little is known about their history prior to the 16th century. In 1777 a new ring of 8 bells was installed, this was increased to 10 in 1820 and in 1913 the final 2 bells were added with bell 12 weighing in at 1729Kg (The 13th bell, a Taylor bell labeled 6a by the Cathedral was later donated by Frederick J. French in 1947 ). Chelmsford cathedral currently boasts the only complete ring of 12 Warner bells in the country. #bishopric #Cathedral #Cedd #Chelmsford #Church #Diocese #Episcopal #Mary #Peter #St #steple
