I printed Joel Telling's (3D Printing Nerd) design for filament spool shelf brackets. I printed them strong but apparently not strong enough. After a period of months they eventually cracked and exploded in a number of places, namely the outside 1x2 slot tongue. once that broke on one or more of the brackets there was a chain reaction that dumped my filament down from up high in my closet. I printed them again with even more infill and more layers/perimeters. Months later the collapse happened again. Based on the failure points, I was determined to re-design something that functions in the same manner but will not fail in the same ways as Joel's design.
My design also utilizes existing "Hyper Strong" shelf brackets from Wally World for less than $1 a piece. These brackets are designed to support 50 lbs each. The printed pieces have a cutout that's designed to help align the printed part with the shelf bracket and then use short wood screws to bind the adapter to the bracket and the 1x2 wood when it's slotted. This should also help keep the wood in place and attached to the bracket. There's also an optional back screw hole and a slot to reach that hole if wanting an additional hard point for the bracket and wall.
The printed part is designed to be printed on its side and not need supports. Also recommend putting 1x2 strips under each end of the shelf 1x2s if they are near a wall or some sort of edge support bracket as well.
