Was wandering through my Thingiverse likes and saw this beauty:
Nickel Stand for role playing portraits - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:20656
Looks good, and is even modeled clean and pretty as i'm such a snob about!
(Props to U/Gilgamesh82)
My only issue was that it requires glue for assembly -That's kind of a deal breaker for me because I am straight awful with any kind of sticky things (glue/tape/whatever).
So I built my own version of it from scratch (based completely off of their design) that requires no glue to get pretty much the same end result. Then I threw together some quick character examples with some sexy typos and boom.
It has two back options, a cross beam for support (if printing on paper, probably a good idea) or an open back in case you want to print back sides to your characters - be that their actual back sides or stats (better for card-stock, works with paper but have to be careful you don't wrinkle it).
Again a 1" wide by 2" tall picture fits in the frame nicely.
Instructions:
1) Print it
2) Snap nickel into the base piece (I used the handle on some scissors to bang it down) - NICKEL IS OPTIONAL, it just adds some nice weight to the piece.
3) Put together the top pieces and slide the paper down from the top.
Should fit regular paper or card-stock.
Prints with no supports or rafts.
Edit #1 - Adjusted model faces and added bat wing front version. While looking at it I realized I should be able to add some decoration to the frame without really altering the print or adding supports.
Edit #2 - Added monster front version.
Edit #2 - Added horse knight version (then edited again because eyes were too small to print) and axe shield version (supposed to be a dwarf) and goblin version - this one with a lower half decoration as well - LEGS!
So those are a few examples of what you can do of the basic frame and it still prints and works. Have fun.
