A timber capstan on the East Pier of Whitby Harbour on the North Yorkshire coast. This is the best preserved of several old capstans still adorning the harbour arms of Whitby, which presumably haven’t been in use for some decades. Capstans were used on land as well as ships for a variety of mechanical functions, largely driven by human muscle power.
Despite some graffiti and litter, it modelled pretty nicely. 103 photographs shot in May 2021 on an overcast day, processed in Metashape.
