The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. A modernised traditional muscle car. 376 ci LSA supercharged V8 with 580 HP. 7:41.27 lap on the 'ring (2012). For non petrolheads, this car can be familiar from the movie, Transformers, car is aka "Bumblebee".
This is my second surface based 3D CAD model, created in Solidworks 2015. Rendering is done in Keyshot 5.
It took me about the same time, like the Honda (https://grabcad.com/library/honda-s2000-surface-solid-1) but I think it's way more precise and more complex. I tried out more features for same surfaces and picked the best looking. Although this can be made also better, but it would be more more time consuming. I found a few facelifts for this ZL1 version, bumpers and roof can be different on some models. At first I tried to imitate everything like on the views, started from the front bumper, but when I got to the rear bumper - because of time issues - I changed my mind a little bit and continued modeling on my personal "taste", goal of this project was also get some more experience with surfacing.
From an engineering view, I think big names in the automotive industry create also the whole bodywork and then they make parts from it and do further works, so reason of the solid version - which you can put in a 3D printer I guess - was to knit all the surfaces into one single piece, correct any mistakes on the joints of surfaces.
Rendering is also a never ending story, every time I watch the pics closer, I find mistakes, but watching it as a whole thing I think it's fair enough in a shorter time.
Rim, tire, brake disc and caliper is also a work of mine, I thought this time I model everything on my own instead of using an existing model. Not so detailed, I tried to do a good compromise in the looks and functionality as for the rim. Caliper is a dummy model, but looks also fair to me.
Rim on the front is 20x10 (5x120 pitch-circle), front tire is about 245/45R20, rear wheel (20x11 rim) is modeled like the 275/45R20 tire's "height" is in the sketch, then I made a part from the assembly and used scaling for the width.
Brake disc is a 14,5" diameter disc. (Just like on the stock ZL1)
No suspension, just the parts which can be seen from the very outside.
Step and parasolid versions included for other CAD system's users.
Project is for educational, 3D printing purposes and for fun, if you use this model, please mention my name, thanks :)
