The British Telecom Tower (formerly known as the Post Office Tower and, before that the GPO Tower) is a landmark in Birmingham, England, and is the city's tallest structure. Construction of the tower commenced in July 1963 and was completed in September 1965. It was designed by the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works with M.H. Bristow being the senior architect. It has 26 storeys with five levels of circular aerial galleries at the top and is 152 metres (500 ft) tall. The tower was orginally designed as a circular building, but as there was only one other circular high rise in Birmingham (the Rotunda), it was changed to a square high rise. It was designed to be stable in high winds and doesn't need foundations. The channels at each corner funnel the wind to counteract the force of the wind swaying the building. The main concrete core of the tower which makes up a majority of the building is designed to withstand an explosion caused by a 1 Megaton Atomic Bomb being detonated as close as a mile to the tower. The tower is known for being home to roosting Peregrines. #Birmingham #British_Telecom #BT_Tower #Post_Office_Tower
