There is a critical shortage of N95 disposable mask during the COVID-19 pandemic. 3M reusable elastomeric mask is used in this critical period but supply of compatible p100 filters can be a problem.
Medical breathing filters (also known as HME filters) are use in hospital for patients requiring mechanical ventilation or intubation. Their viral/bacterial filtration efficiency are very high ( 99.99% or higher). They are also used in COVID-19 patients.
We developed a adapter for medical breathing filters to be used with 3M re-usable respirator. Such setup passed the quantitative fit test using the PortaCount Respirator Fit Tester 8038 (TSI incorporated).
This allow healthcare worker to have contingency backup to protect themselves should they run out of disposable N95 mask while looking after COVID patients.
