Established in 1823 with a lightship, Brandywine Shoal became the first screwpile-type light station in the United States when the original structure was built in 1850. This was supplanted in 1913 by the present, reinforced-concrete structure, which contained a third-order Fresnel lens removed from the original tower. Automated in 1974, the tower, which is frequently visible from ferries and incoming vessels, has been maintained very well. The screwpile foundation to the original lighthouse was finally removed sometime after the Second World War, the tower having been removed years before.
