The polypropylene bowl for the Bosch Universal Plus mixer has a spur gear at the top of the center column that snaps in with a set of six flexible tabs. While it isn't a food contact surface, the tight space between the hidden, lower area of the gear and the center column can accumulate debris (especially from a dishwasher) and develop an unpleasant odor.
This tool allows you to easily push out the spur gear for better cleaning. You may notice from the photos that my spur gear is missing one of those locking tabs... it is very difficult to remove without this tool! (I broke it, but it still works.)
To use the tool, first remove the center axle. Invert the bowl, look down inside the center column to see the spur gear's locking tabs. Align the tool's fingers with those tabs, engaging all six at once, and push down firmly on the tool. The spur gear will move just a couple millimeters, enough to pass the locking tabs and let you pull it off the top.
