Boden's fool Boden's Fool is a typical checkmate pattern in the game of chess. It is named after Samuel Boden, who with it won the Schulder-Boden game, London, 1853. In the match, Black (Boden) plays the Defense Philidor. The moves of that game (in algebraic notation) were 1.e4 e5 2.Cf3 d6 3.c3 f5 4.Ac4 Cf6 5.d4 fxe4 6.dxe5 exf3 7.exf6 Dxf6 8.gxf3 Cc6 9.f4 Ad7 10.Ae3 OOO 11.Cd2 Te8 12.Df3 Af5 13.OOO? (13.Ad5 is better) 13 ... d5! 14.Axd5 ?? (allowing a forced mate; it is much better 14.Tde1) 14 ... Dxc3 + 15.bxc3 Aa3 #, giving the final position of mate shown in the diagram: the king is matted by the cross-fire of the two bishops and blocked by two pieces of the own deployment. The same pattern happened in several other games, usually, as in this case, after the losing king perched on Donna's side (eg in the Canal-NN game, called 'Peruvian immortal', played in a simultaneous 1934 ) #chess #boden's fool #checkmate
