This allows you to mount the fob receiver, normally housed in the rear view mirror, to the windshield after replacing the the rear view mirror with a smaller one.
The tri-lobe mirror adapters, usually marketed for dodge/ram/chrysler, also fit our Z3's. I mounted a smaller, adjustable rear view mirror, with one of these adapters. This paired with a Pilot Automotive MI-009 8" mirror made a great improvement to visibility for me.
