Biloxi Lighthouse

The Biloxi Lighthouse, located in the median of highway 90, was built and established in 1848 after Congress authorized $12,000 for a lighthouse on the Mississippi Sound at Biloxi, Mississippi. The 61 foot tower supports a Fifth Order Fresnal lens, and the lighthouse is still operational today. The lighthouse was automated in 1941. Prior to that time it was operated by a series of individuals whose families often lived in the keeper's quarters at the base of the tower. Although it has been ravaged by many hurricanes through the years, it has survived them all including the devastating Camille in 1969, and Katrina in 2005. The tower is now owned by the City of Biloxi, Mississippi and is operated as a private aid to navigation.
