Why
I'm fed up having the door constantly slamming down while working on things. My initial idea was to find a way to lock the door opened, and optionally gives the option to completely remove the door for easier operation.
Inspiration
I found some interesting designs on Thingiverse, but none was fulfilling all my requirements.
I got inspired by Macbolan75 for the snap mechanism and by memmop for using magnets.
Design
I started from scratch a completely new design:
I wanted a sturdy design, so I used a 5 mm metal (brass) rod as axle. I had to redesign the whole snap part to fit the new axis size
I wanted the magnets to be hidden, so I had to put them as much off-axis as possible so they provide more "holding torque"
BOM
8 round Neodymium magnets (10 mm diameter, 2 mm thick, grade N42) (10€ for 50 pieces on Amazon):
The force required on the handle to close the door is +/- 150g. You can go for N49 or N52 grade magnets, but they are far more brittle.
5 mm rod, 2 x 30 mm long (aluminium, brass, copper, steel, you name it)
reuse the stock hinge screws
