This is the historic Beardstown Lincoln Courthouse. Built in 1844 it stands as a memorial as the only courtroom still in use where Lincoln practiced law. The “Lincoln Courtroom and Lincoln Museum” it appears as it did when Lincoln acquitted Duff Armstrong in the famous Lincoln Almanac Trial on May 7, 1858. The almanac is on display, along with a painting of the trail by Bud Anderson. Featured in the museum is an ambrotype photograph taken by Byer's Studio located at 101 State Street taken in1858 around the time of the trial of a gaunt young Lincoln in the prime of his career as a lawyer. It is the only formal photograph of Lincoln in an Old Holland white suit. It was in front of this building where Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln's Democratic opponent for United States Senate, delivered an address on August 12, 1858 and brought on the Lincoln-Douglas debates. The original town consisted of twenty-three blocks deep, including a plot of land to be used as a marketplace as a gift from founder Thomas Beard; it has remained as a public park that is still used every Friday at 3 p.m. for the Beardstown Farmer's Market and stands directly in front of the Museum. Currently this building is used by Beardstown Chamber of Commerce and as meeting place for the famous Beardstown Ladies Investment Club.
