The vault is one of the fundamental types of architectural coverage. It is a theoretical series of arcs placed side by side in depth to form the third dimension, or the result of the rotation of a conic arc (not degenerate). As in the arches, it is necessary to distinguish between true and proper vaults, that is, created in masonry with stones or wedge-shaped bricks, with the joints oriented towards a central point, and sometimes apparent or improper (sometimes more generically called shell coverings), created in cast concrete, wood, reinforced concrete, etc. The exclusive use of its own vaults is very rare: since Roman times apparent concrete vaults were built.
